About Kula

People run the business.
We make sure they are never on their own.

Kula helps service businesses become AI native with their own people at the centre. We back the team, so they spend less time chasing and more time with the people in front of them.

A note from the founders

We come at this from two sides. One of us has spent 25 years running studios, and the other has been building software for small businesses since 1985.

The best studios we have known were never run by software. They were run by people who knew every name, every routine and every quirk of the building.

Kula exists to give every team that kind of knowledge, without burning out the few people who carry it. People run the business. We just make sure they are never on their own.

Phil Goodwin

Phil has run studios for 25 years. He founded Body Mind Life in February 2002 and knows the shift changes, cover teachers, new starters and small things that slip, from the inside. Before studios he spent nine years at Deutsche Bank, from trainee economist to head trader in share price index futures, so he reads a business in its numbers as well as its names.

  • Founded and runs Body Mind Life, a yoga and Pilates group, since February 2002. He taught about 3,500 classes himself between 2004 and 2012 and still teaches on its teacher training programme.
  • Nine years at Deutsche Bank, from trainee economist to head trader in share price index futures, then business development at an SMS messaging start-up for traders, part of the team that raised $7 million.
  • Audited 24 years of Body Mind Life’s job history and found 102 recurring management jobs, close to half of which stopped, lapsed or became unclear when the person running them moved on.
  • The operator’s side of every Kula decision: what a shift needs, what a manager will use, and what will not survive a Monday morning.

Peter Tippett

Peter grew up in his family’s small engineering business, where he trained as a production and industrial engineer in New Zealand, with an extension in operations research and time and motion study, and programmed CNC lathes from 1977 to 1985. In 1985 he left to found SapphireOne, a software company building software for small businesses, and ran it until 2000. SapphireOne is still in business today, and he has been building software ever since. He writes much of Kula’s code himself. That is what he brings to Kula: how work really flows, how to measure it fairly, and how to improve it without burning people out.

  • Left the family engineering business in 1985 to found SapphireOne, software for small businesses, and ran it until 2000. The company is still in business today.
  • Co-founded iPowow, live TV audience engagement used by ESPN, NBC, CNN and Fox. It opened the second-screen market in 2010 with UFC as the first client, then Channel Nine’s Cricket Viewer Verdict.
  • Rebuilt Body Mind Life’s software stack off its old booking platform, the work Kula grew out of.
  • Builds Kula Intelligence: the platform that connects a business’s systems into one governed model, its MCP connection for Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools, and the model of how a business works that Kula Ops runs on.

Four rebuilds in 18 months

Twelve months ago AI could not do everything a club needs. Now it can.

We know, because we rebuilt Kula four times in 18 months as AI improved and operators told us what they needed. We are not precious about our own work, and the timing is now right.

01
2025

A data layer under the business, plus the Action Board retention dashboard

What we learned. Data alone does not change a day on the floor.

02
Late 2025

A whole-business snapshot, sold online

What we learned. Only three sold. Owners wanted something living, not a report.

03
January to August 2026

A relationship-based model of the business, plus Tribe, with four sites sharing data

What we learned. The model works when it reflects people and relationships.

04
September 2026 onwards

Kula Ops, the app the team opens every day

What we learned. Put the model in the team’s hands and it backs them every shift.

Our thesis

The software was never the problem. Running the business around it is.

Most of a service business’s week goes on the work around its systems: chasing, checking, re-keying and remembering. We think AI can now carry that work, and that doing so is how people get back to the part only people can do. Apps, the time clock, the exception queue and the follow-up Kula keeps track of all come from this one idea.

We said it first

AI-built platforms, not off-the-shelf software.

In September 2024 we published a paper arguing that businesses would stop buying off-the-shelf software and run platforms built around how they work, with AI doing the building. We thought that was a 2030 story. AI made it a 2026 story, and it is why a business can add its own Apps to Kula Ops today.

The budget nobody serves

The judgement calls around the work.

Every business has routine work that is the same each time, like opening checks, rosters and payments. Around it sits the part that takes judgement, where managers notice, understand, decide, act and check. Software never served that part. Extra admin hours and consultants did. It is the part Kula Ops is built for.

People at the centre

The outcome is a person who feels they belong.

In fitness, the outcome is a member who feels they belong, and a person delivers that moment. Kula takes care of the routine work and keeps the judgement calls moving, so staff can do the part only they can.

The business has to be ahead

One test for every line.

Time and money Kula gives back go to the business first, as capacity for its people and never as a reason to cut. If a line fails that test, our price is wrong, not the business.

What we believe

A few things we will not bend on.

People run the business

Kula backs them. Your people make the calls, and Kula makes sure they have what they need to make them well.

Time given back

Time saved is capacity given back to your team, for members and customers. It is never a reason to cut.

Start now, step carefully

Start straight away with what you already have, and see it working before anything changes.

Built from your know-how

Kula starts with the documents and systems you already have. Nothing to rip out or replace.

Plain words

Help and answers in plain language, written for the person who needs them.

Honest proof

We only publish results our customers have signed off. Any modelled figure is labelled as a model estimate.

Why fitness first? Because it is the industry we know from the inside.
